Context: Summer camp
Date: December 1, 2012
During the summers of 2010 and 2011, as well as many weekends during the subsequent school years, I spent my time as a team leader (camp counselor) at a Christian camp called Youth Haven Ranch. Youth Haven Ranch is a camp for underprivileged children which seeks to provide these children with an enjoyable time as well as teach them about Jesus Christ. Every week I led a team of girls in daily activities and events. Part of my responsibilities included leading daily devotionals with the girls on my team. In addition, I had an incredible amount of opportunities to show Christ’s love to children from a variety of often difficult home situations, and often to have personal conversations with them about Christ. It was a joy and privilege to watch many of these girls grow in their relationships with Christ and with each other, especially as I watched them return to camp many times over the years. This artifact, a letter of recommendation written by my camp director, demonstrates my portrayal of the SAU Concept because it shows how I “critically participated in the contemporary world” by sharing Jesus Christ with my campers.
During the daily devotionals I led, campers participated in activities and discussions which led them to think more deeply about spiritual matters. My goal was to make these devotionals interesting and relatable to the girls so they would be engaged in learning and would remember important lessons. Although some devotionals were more encouraging than others, it was always so amazing when the team was able to have a meaningful discussion, and especially when I saw the girls carrying out what they had learned throughout the week. Several main concepts the girls learned were what it means to love others unconditionally, how to honor God in all aspects of their lives, and, of course, God’s great love for them. While teaching these girls about God’s love, I was also challenged to grow in the ways I showed Christ’s love to others. The ideas expressed in the SAU Concept are extremely important to me as a teacher because they are a huge part of why I want to teach in the first place. I desire to challenge my students academically and in their character growth by keeping Christ as the perspective for all learning which takes place in my classroom. I plan to continue growing in my ability to do this by spending time with the Lord and growing closer to Him so that all of my actions reflect His love.
